Last blog

For my last blog of English 102. I am glad this class semester is ending. For paper#4. I am trying to decide what to write. I want to write about controversial issue. Hopefully I will be able to get five sources and get a good topic. Paper#3 I did not do very good job of using sources,so i anded up fixing it.This class has been long and hard,but i learned about blogging,researching and citation. Hopefully i will get a good grade and have a great spring.

Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde

The story of  Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde written by Robert Louis Stevenson.My paper is about nature vs. nature.Frankenstein and Jekyll and Mr. Hyde their message was similar.Like Dr.Frankenstein,Dr.Jekyll could not control his monster and spent his life trying to undo the damage that had been done. In the story of  Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde.The doctor created his own split personality or evil side.His evil personality turns out to be Mr.Hyde.Dr.Jekyll quickly found that he could not his evil side.I believe that both nature vs. nature play a part in how a person turns out.Both stories deal with doctors who where trying to create an unnatural being for the purpose of advancing science.They could not control what they created.

Paper 3

I'm working on my paper 3 about Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.  There is a lot of confusion in this book for me.  There is lots of death.  I'm not sure even how many people Mr. Hyde killed.  I don't understand about what Dr. Jekyll had to pay money for.  Can someone help me here?  Today we watched a movie that didn't have anything to do with the book or paper 3.  The movie was boring for me but I'm glad that I stayed because she gave extra credit to the people who came and stayed the whole class time.  So, I'm very happy for the extra credit because I'm going to need it.  I'm not sure how this paper 3 will turn out.

Spring?

It's suppose to be Spring outside.  Last week we got a storm that surprised me.  I was not ready for the storm.  I thought it was just a little snow coming or rain.  I didn't know it was going to be this bad.  I was trying to get ready for work Wednesday morning.  My car got stuck in the driveaway.  It made me late for work.  I had to dig out my car with a shovel.  I finally got out.  I called AAA but they were so busy no one answered the phone.  Oh well, it's Michigan.  I never feel the Spring in Michigan.  It just goes from winter to summer.  One day it's 50 or 55, the next day it's 20.  I really like warm weather but I don't have the choice right now to move.  I grew up with really warm weather all the time.  I like a little snow but I don't like driving in the snow or cleaning up after it.

Holiday Traditions

In class we talked about the Lottery paper and about holiday traditions.  My concern is about Halloween.  I never heard about Halloween until I came to America.  My daughter goes to school and the school celebrates it with costumes and everything.  She wants to wear a costume and get the candy.  I don't understand the meaning of Halloween and I can't explain it to her.  We talk to children and tell them not to talk to strangers or take candy from them, then we take them out and let them go to stranger's houses and ask for candy.  My concern is the school should explain about Halloween and that kids shouldn't eat the candy until their parents check it and are sure it's safe.  It's a scary thing for the kids with monsters and fires and dead bodies.  The dark is scary too.  I don't like walking around in the dark in an area I don't know.

Class canceled

I did't think we had to do a blog this week. Because of spring break. I was glad that day class was canceled. My daughter school was close we have no daycare. I was worry that this week my paper was due.I was scare because of the bad weather .Then I heard the phone ring.I got the call from Mott saying class was canceled.My paper was done.

Paper 2

In paper 2 we have to write about one character.  It seems to me I will have a hard time talking about one character for 4 pages.  I'll try.  I know we've learned a lot in this class about the book and Dr. Frankenstein.  I was getting bored listening to the same things about the monster and Victor.  I'll be glad to get this paper over with and move on to something new.  I liked the story but I tired of talking about it.  This book was interesting how Victor created the monster and a female for the monster.  Why create a female for the monster who killed his wife and family?  Why keep helping the monster?  I would not have helped the monster. What do you think?

Women and Freedom

In this book, I learned some things about women and the way they have been treated.  Mary Shelley was an educated woman with knowledge but not always the freedom she wanted.  She made choices in her life.  She loved her husband and her children.  She had money but society did not give many choices to women.  She felt that many other women in social life didn't have opportunities like she had.  The book talks about Justine and Safie and that they are mistreated.  I think women should have freedom.  If a woman marries and the husband and wife make a decision they should both make it.  If they talk about something together, I think that is the right way to make decisions.  The women should say yes or no.  In this book I learned that women have not always had these freedoms.  These rights are not allowed in lots of countries today.

About Mary Shelley

I read about Mary Shelley online.  She was a British novelist.  She also wrote short stories, dramas, and essays.  She was best known for the novel Frankenstein which she wrote in 1818.  She married Percy Shelley in 1814.  They travelled through Europ.  She came up with the idea for the story of Frankenstein while she and her husband were in Switzerland.  She lost three children.  A fourth child survived.  Her husband died in 1822.  She went back to England to raise her son.  She died in 1851 of a brain tumor.  It seems like she went through a lot in her life.  She had many losses at a young age.

Thoughts about "The Prince" Chapter 18

     I learned a lot from this chapter.  It is important to show authority; to let people know who's boss.  However, this can be taken too far.  "Princes should keep their word."  After reading this, I think everone can't always keep their word.  We are human and have a human nature.  We are never perfect.  Neither was the prince.  Another topic from chapter 18 is the importance of "keeping up apprearances." For my large paper #1, I am writing about the history of my native country and the political problems.  Many of the problems are like those of the prince.  I think this paper will be interesting even though I'm not that into this book.  This paper will be hard to write.  I am still working on this paper.  Wish me luck.

Problem for a prince(Chapter three)

People are willing to have a new ruler if they believe it will make their life better.  But if things get worse, they want a another leader.  Great example is
what is going on in Egypt.  The ruler has been in power for 30 years and he has not let the majority of people change the government.  So he has built up a country of enemies with few people on his side.  The friends of his government are also calling on change for the people although the change may not be good for those governments.  It could be become worse, but if people choose it may be better.  Therefore all princess or dictators will face enemies and friends.  The Egypt example shows a leader which is from an older generation satisfying the needs of the older regime and cultural style.  While today's Egypt is a young and educated society with different needs and social changes.  These are young technically advanced people with needs of better economic conditions.   This can represent what chapter three discuss with a land of different culture and social makeup than the current dictator comes from and needs a change for the people and the land.

Cellphones and Driving

Todays communication methods are greatly advanced, but at have made it dangerous at the same time.  The greatest example of this today is cellphones and driving.  Cellphones are great, I believe for mobile communication, but most people like to use them everywhere.  The worst place for this is driving while try to manipulate calling, texting, or watching videos.  We here all the time about deaths or tragic accidents from cellphone users.  We see people cutoff other drivers without knowing what is going around  them because of cellphones. No. 1 cause of driving while distracted (DWD) today is a wireless device, and driving while using a cell phone can cause 4 times the risk for fatal accident reported by NHSTA(nsurance Institute for Highway Safety). It is reported that 25% of accidents are caused by driving while distracted by police reports.  Carnegie Mellon reports that driving attention is reduce 37% while using a cell phone.  This said I believe we should have bans on the use of cell phones while driving or fines if found driving while using a cellphone.  This means any type of phone usage, except for emergency situations, such as a automobile issue while on the side of the road.  Many states and local municipalities are putting laws into places.  So far eight states have some sort of laws in place not allowing cellphones.  Most states have some sort of restriction on texting while driving and complete ban on school bus drivers.  I believe all states should have strict rules in place and penalties if found driving while using a cellphone.  Obviously if the accident has happened then it's too late.  So hopefully more drivers will catch on this second form of drunk driving that technology has created.

Children and Violent Video Games

Dr. Phil article responses:

Violence from children playing video games is probably one of the aspects of outside aggression in schools and colleges. As the recent shootings at Virgina tech and other schools could be potential causes of violent video games. We see lots of bullying in schools and this could be caused from video games also.

Kids also don't learn moral consequences as Dr. Phil points out. This can result in disruptive behavior in the classroom or later in adult life in the workplace. We see many cases where shootings in the workplace occur because people believe this is the way to resolve their issues.

Parents need to get involved with their children also when it comes to these video games. One way would be to play with them or to limit their play and types of games. This could help their children in the long run and provide better life in the school environment.

Science News response:

Kids with certain preexisting mental conditions need to be watched more carefully playing violent video games. Apparently the study finds that most kids do not develop aggresion but may actually become more skilled and socialized.

Supreme Confrontation: Games, Violence, and the Law:

Here we have a case of video games being regulated for sale due the nature of their violence or use. Here there is a debate between art and device. A game is a computer internally but the software on there is a form of expression. So, I do believe the courts should be able to put stickers or such on the games but not any control of the sales of the items.
